Industrial biotechnology enables the utilization of renewable resources and the development of novel materials and active substances for almost all markets and areas of life. Industrial biotechnology is an innovation driver in climate protection, with production processes that reduce greenhouse gases while improving competitiveness. Industrial biotechnology gives decisive impulses for innovation in many fields, such as the chemical, paper, leather and automotive industries, skin and hair care, household applications and medicine. In 2007 the Cluster CLIB2021 wants to successfully establish German and European industrial biotechnology - in industry, in small and mid-sized enterprises (SMEs) and in academia. Taking a cross-regional approach, CLIB2021 wants to help make innovative business plans become reality.

The starting point for CLIB2021 was the "BioIndustrie 2021" competition of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in 2007. This competition was about the best cluster concept for establishing industrial biotechnology. CLIB2021 was awarded the 1st prize which involves promotion funds of 20 million euros from BMBF for projects in research & development.

About CLIB2021

CLIB2021 works for and promotes industrial biotechnology.

CLIB2021 actively networks the chemical industry, biotechnology start-ups (SMEs) and science institutes from all over Germany, customer industries and investors.

CLIB2021 initiates future-oriented R&D projects in industrial biotechnology, strengthening the competitiveness of companies and academic institutes. From 2007/08 cooperation projects between industry, SMEs and academia will commence with a total volume of 40 million euros, promoted inter alia with public funding.

CLIB2021 supports start-up and project financing and provides expert advice.

CLIB2021 focuses on projects and technologies relevant to the chemical industry. A special focus is on monomers, polymers and their functions in a wide range of uses, such as e.g. packaging, transport engineering, equipment, sports, household applications, cosmetics and medicine.

CLIB2021 relies on industrial biotechnology platforms. Most of these platforms are designed and made available by academic institutes.
